What is research in CAMHS
Everyone benefits from research - it allows the NHS to innovate and develop new treatments. There is still so much to discover and research helps us to widen our knowledge about the best way to care for you and your family.
Whether you're a patient, member of our community or co-worker, there are many ways you can be involved and we are committed to making research as accessible and impactful as possible.
If you are interested in taking part in any of our research studies within CAMHS, check out the links below for more information on the current studies that are taking place and how you can get involved.

SPARX
Would you like to be involved in a research study for your low mood?
-
Are you between 11-19 years old?
-
Have you been feeling sad, worried or had low motivation?
Researches are currently testing if SPARX, an online game, could be used to support young people with depression.
SPARX features a virtual world where users are guided by an avatar through various skills and techniques, based on cognitive behavioural therapy, to manage their mood. The game includes challenges such as collecting gems and fighting elements, such as shooting gnats (gloomy negative automatic thoughts) which aim to keep the young person engaged with the game.
#BeeWell
The #BeeWell programme is delivered in partnership with secondary schools to find out what affects young people’s wellbeing and what can be done to enhance it. Since 2021, we’ve listened to the voices of more than 85,000 young people across Greater Manchester and Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton.
Using a co-designed survey, we listen to the voices of as many young people as possible; publish the results privately to schools and publicly by neighbourhood; and drive action across communities to improve young people’s wellbeing.
#BeeWell’s Mission is to see this approach implemented nationally.
STORY
Would you live to be involved in a research study for eating disorders?
-
Are you between 16-25 years old?
-
Do you have an eating disorder or think you may have one?
-
Or have no history of an eating disorder?
Take part in the STORY study where they are exploring the diverse experiences of young people with eating disorders. This project will be looking at how symptoms progress over time and what helps or hinders recovery.
Participation will involve online surveys, assessments and cognitive tasks for 1 year.
