Education mental health practitioner

About the role...

Education mental health practitioners (EMHPs) work across education and healthcare to provide mental health support for children and young people in schools and colleges. Trained to help children and young people manage common mental health problems, particularly mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and behaviour problems. The role will be to provide early support for children and young people such as cognitive therapy-based interventions, to address emerging mental health needs. EMHPs are trained to support schools and colleges with whole-organisation approaches to mental health and wellbeing.



What qualifications do I need?

The Education mental health practitioner (EMHP) training is open to people with a range of experience such as Non graduate or psychology graduate or other graduate or other mental health professional. Those with a degree will typically undertake a postgraduate diploma and those without a degree will normally undertake an equivalent undergraduate-level qualification. For both routes you will need to apply for a position as a trainee EMHP in a mental health support team to access the training. Training places are open to either people from the local community, with a wide range of life experience who have maths and English skills; or graduates or those who can demonstrate that they can meet the academic requirements of the post graduate level qualification.

What experience do I need to bring?

Experience of working with children and young people (CYP) with mental health problems and of working in education settings is desirable. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential.
